Fireflies

I decided, right then, I wasn't yours to keep.
How strange that was. I remember choking through tears months ago that you weren't mine to keep.
So elusive, my meandering thoughts chased you for months, the thing I couldn't have.
After all that time I had you. My fingers closed around your tiny beating wings as I tried not to crush you. Alight like a lightning bug, glowing between the cracks of my fingers.
In a second you were flying again, carrying away my secrets I had whispered quietly into cupped palms under the shade of a weeping willow while it rained.
My will o' wisp.
Gone.
And I felt I could chase you no longer.
